Case of the Stolen Potato Chips
Through the County’s Restorative Resources program, conflicts are transformed, harm repaired and communities built according to Tori Coto and Karen Pino. Youngsters from First through 12th grades sit in a circle, often with their teachers, to share and find ways to resolve conflict. The group expects to work in Washington School this fall, was at Jefferson in the spring and instrumental in finding solutions to the high school hazing problem seven years ago. Those solutions remain in effect today as students build respect for themselves, each other and their community. One group explored the impact of a stolen bag of potato chips. How it affected the thief, observers and their community.
The group works with crime victims in the justice arena and in schools helps students explore the consequences of their actions. When a crime is involved the victim is invited to attend the conferences.
The goal in the schools is to quickly create stronger relationships between teachers and students and provide them with the skills to communicate, work out conflicts and cooperatively problem solve.
